Governor Pawlenty Heads Down Wrong Road
with Health Commissioner Finalists

Both candidates have a long history of promoting HMOs and restrictive managed care strategies

Minneapolis/Saint Paul - In the wake of Governor Pawlenty's announcement of his two finalists for health commissioner, Mary C. Edwards, RN, MPH and Sanne Magnan, MD, Ph.D., Citizens' Council on Health Care released the following statement from Twila Brase, president of CCHC:

"The Governor's choice of health commissioners is a sign that he is not thinking about free-markets or freedom in health care. Ms. Edwards and Dr. Magnan have long supported managed care and cost control strategies that restrict patient access to medical treatment.

"By restricting himself to these two choices, Governor Pawlenty is going down the wrong road in health care—the road to higher costs, intrusive controls, and restricted access to patient care through bureaucratic management.

"We are very concerned that the new commissioner will carry a pro-managed care bias into this very important government position."
